Kazan is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan:
This autonomous republic is located in the eastern part of European Russia and is the most populous independent republic in Russia
Kazan has a history of thousands of years, which is also reflected in the unique buildings in the Kazan Kremlin. This particular Kremlin is considered one of the most beautiful in Russia, perhaps even the most beautiful. The Kazan Kremlin was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 , and rightly so.
The Kremlin was built on the remains of the former residence of the Khan of Kazan in the course of the conquest of Kazan by Ivan IV the Terrible. To celebrate the victory over Kazan, Ivan had a small wooden church built in Kazan, which was finished within a few days, and likewise he had St. Basil’s Cathedral built in Moscow on Red Square. The wooden church in Kazan was later rebuilt and today the impressive Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation stands in its place. It is believed to have been built in 1 556 , making it the oldest building in the Kazan Kremlin.
The Kazan Kremlin is located on the Kazanka, a tributary of the Volga River, and is the seat of Kazan’s government. Also located on the Kremlin is Europe’s largest mosque. The Kul Sharif Mosque was completed in 2005 .
